CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Lenalee Lee
AGE: 17
CANON: D.Gray-Man

CANON HISTORY: http://dgrayman.wikia.com/wiki/Lenalee_Lee
CANON PERSONALITY: At first glance, Lenalee is a polite and cheerful young woman dedicated to her mission. She welcomes newcomers warmly and jokes around with her coworkers. Despite the nightmarish war she is involved in, Lenalee is usually found with a smile on her face. She encourages others to look for the positive in situations, even when the outlook is bleak. When a mission is over she looks forward to going home to see her friends and family. And though she possesses a certain amount of status in the Order due to being a valuable Exorcist, she enjoys helping out in little ways, like bringing coffee to the Science Department.

Lenalee is very much in touch with her emotions. When she's happy or upset or angry she expresses it openly. Though this can make her seem a bit dramatic, it is also a strength, because it makes it easy for her to show her affection for her friends. Need a hug? Go to Lenalee. Need someone to listen to your troubles? Go to Lenalee. Though, at the same time this can cause her friends to keep things from her in a misguided attempt to keep her from worrying about them. Even when she's trying to mask when she's feeling troubled, her friends can read her like a book.

That isn't to say she is all sweetness and butterflies. Due to her friendly and cheerful nature, most who know Lenalee would agree that it's pretty scary when her temper comes out. Lenalee's patience for foolishness (ie Kanda trying to chop a new teammate in half or Komui setting loose yet another Kumorin) is rather limited, and she takes a bit of a tough-love stance when her friends are misbehaving. And when Lenalee holds a grudge, she can be petty about it. After Allen recklessly risks his life trying to save an Akuma instead of working with his teammates, she refuses to speak to him for days, without telling him why she's angry.

However, underneath all of this is the pain she carries from being confined in the Black Order since childhood. It was either get with the program and feel like a caged bird or risk never seeing the outside world again and be absolutely miserable for the rest of her life. After fighting the training for years, Lenalee only submitted after her brother joined the Order, and because of this, Lenalee views herself as selfish for 'trapping' her older brother in the Order with her. She also thinks she's heartless for the way she doesn't care about anyone outside of the Order (despite the fact this is directly contradicted by the way she protects civilians on the battlefield).

Due to the training she underwent during her childhood and the doctrine of the Order itself, Lenalee tends to have a very confined view of the world around her. Because anyone could be an Akuma in disguise and it is impossible to detect an Akuma while they hide in human form, anyone who is not associated with the Order should be considered an enemy. To think otherwise could be deadly for an Exorcist. Thus, her view of 'the world' is restricted to those individuals inside and associated with the Order. To lose any of them, from a fellow Exorcist to a lowly Finder, is like losing an irreplaceable piece of the world.

Because of this, Lenalee's attachments to her friends, coworkers, and family are fierce, and nothing exhibits this more than when she is defending them. In both her battle against Eshii and the attack on the old London HQ, Lenalee knowingly risks death to protect people she cares about. Though Exorcists face possible death every time they battle Akuma, Lenalee knows forcing a maximum invocation when her synchronization rate isn't high enough will likely be too much stress for her body to physically take. But without heavy hitters like Allen or Kanda around, she has no choice if she wants to save the rest of her companions from Eshii. And when she is forced to chose between sitting by while her very home is attacked or risk becoming a Fallen One if forcibly re-implanting her Innocence fails, she chooses to take that risk (even though ultimately another path opens to her).

In fact, her attachment to the people she cares about overrides her commitment to the Order. Though the way she was treated as a child and the way they treat Kanda and Allen engender no feelings of loyalty in Lenalee, after coming to terms with her anger toward both the Order and her Innocence, she resolves to keep fighting against the Earl in order to protect those she cares about. But when Kanda returns to the Order and wants to reclaim his Innocence, she asks him why he would do that after he was finally free. And when Kanda leaves the Order without permission in order to find Allen, she lies to her own brother about where he'd gone, risking punishment by the Order.

That isn't to say Lenalee is looking for a way to escape the Order, at least not anymore. Though she doesn't agree with the Order on a great many things, particularly their views on Allen and the 14th, she does agree that the Earl is dangerous and must be stopped. 'It's Complicated' is a grave understatement. But during the attack on London HQ, Lenalee stopped resenting her Innocence and desired to bond with it in order to protect her home. But that also meant she would have to honestly accept her position as an Exorcist of the Order. Though the pain and the trauma is still there, Lenalee is working to put aside her anger. That isn't to say she won't side against the Order in the future, because she walks a very fine line of compliance and resistance, and she struggles with her divided loyalties.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Innocence: As a child Lenalee was found compatible with the Holy substance Innocence and paired with the Dark Boots, an evolved equipment-type (known as crystal-type) Innocence that, when activated, greatly increase Lenalee's speed and strength, particularly in her legs. Innocence is harmful to the Earl, his Noahs, and their weapons called Akumas (machines powered by the souls of dead people). In addition to using her Innocence for general physical combat, Lenalee has displayed a number of special techniques:
Onkyou no Tougi: Otokase (音響の踏技 「音枷」, lit. Stepping Skill of Sound: "Sound Shackles"): Lenalee's Dark Boots interface with sound waves, solidifying the sound of each step into a surface, enabling her to travel at the speed of sound.
Suijou no Tougi: Mizukase (水上の踏技 「水枷」, lit. Stepping Skill of Water: "Water Shackles"): The Dark Boots interface with water, enabling her to walk on liquid surfaces.
Enbu: Kirikaze (円舞「霧風」, Waltz: "Mist-Wind"): The Dark Boots interface with air currents, enabling her to stir up a destructive tornado with a whirling kick.
Shittsui no Tougi: Tetsukase (失墜の踏技 「鉄枷」, Falling Footwork: "Iron Shackles"): Upon maximum invocation, Lenalee's Dark Boots transform into a massive collection of heavy blades.
Martial Arts : Due to the nature of her weapon, Lenalee primarily fights with her feet and legs and from the age of six she learned various kicking-focused martial arts. You pretty much never see her throw a punch. A slap on the other hand...

Gymnast : To compliment her fighting style, Lenalee utilizes a great deal of tumbling and flips, as shown in her battle against the Level 4 when she back flips to grab the Akuma with her feet and then proceeds to throw it. Also, multiple backflips in heels. You try that without breaking your neck.

Sentient Innocence : Not necessarily a power of Lenalee's, but one associated with her Innocence, Dark Boots. On two occasions, Lenalee's Innocence has acted on its own to protect her, encasing her body in a protective shell. First, when she forced a pushed her sync rate past what her body could handle while battling Eshi and second when the Earl leveled Edo. This perhaps could be viewed as a precursor to her Innocence evolving.

Sibling Bond : Lenalee has a very strong connection with her older brother, Komui. While the full nature of this connection isn't explained, it is implied that each can tell when the other is in mortal danger and Lenalee has known when Komui was asleep despite being countries away.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Li-Na Yiu [姚丽娜]
AU AGE: 17
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Lenalee lacks the cross shaped scars on her ankles. Her hair is also black rather than green and her eyes brown rather than purple.

AU HISTORY: Born in Hong Kong, Li-Na was a bit of a surprise for her parents. After having her older brother twelve years before, they had tried for years to have a second child. But though her mother dearly wanted a daughter, she had trouble in each subsequent pregnancy. After three miscarriages, she finally put her desires for a daughter aside and focused on her son. So when a visit to the doctor for what she thought were troublesome symptoms of menopause resulted in a pregnancy diagnosis, Li-Na's parents were stunned.

Suffice to say, her older brother was not too keen on the idea of a younger sibling. He was rather used to being an only child and the excitement he witnessed as his mother prepared for his baby sister made him feel a little underappreciated. With all the time he had to spend on his studies, it was relatively easy for him to ignore the new addition to the family. At first. By the time he graduated high school, he'd earned a reputation among his peers for being an overly devoted big brother.

Li-Na's talent for dance became apparent at a young age. And when her parents enrolled her in dance classes when she was four, she loved it. At six she switched to a more focused dance academy and started studying ballet in earnest.

However, when Li-Na was eight, her parents were killed in a car accident. Halfway through his university studies, with no idea how to raise a child on his own, her brother allowed her to be placed in the care of a distant relative in China, on the understanding Li-Na would be able to continue her dance studies. Just until he finished his engineering degree and got a job so he could take care of her himself.

They were the worst two years of Li-Na's life. The relative treated her more like a servant than a family member and did not allow her to take dance lessons, instead using the money for gambling and drinking. When the children at her school bullied her mercilessly, the relative did nothing. To add insult to injury, the relative chopped off Li-Na's long, beautiful hair, because 'it's too much for a little girl to manage on her own.' Within six months, Li-Na stopped talking and her school performance began to suffer.

Though Li-Na was unable to take dance lessons, she found ways to dance on her own, going over and over the instruction she'd already received the previous four years. This period solidified her love for dance, and dance was the only thing that got her through the two years she was separated from her brother. Because of legal entanglements with their parents' money, her brother was obligated to work the rest of time he was in college in order to have enough money to live on and for tuition, when meant he was unable to visit even once.

So when her brother finally finished his degree, found a job, and came to collect her, he was horrified at the change in Li-Na. The next year was one of painful reconnection for both siblings, Li-Na fighting with her anger toward her brother, and her brother trying to atone for, in his mind, leaving her behind. Frankly, she's still a little angry at her brother over it, even though she as she grew older she came to understand he only meant to do what was best for her. And in turn her brother continues to harbor a great deal of guilt for what he views as abandoning his baby sister, even if only for a short time.

Times heals most wounds though, and her brother did everything in his power to make up for leaving her with the relative, showering her with all the love and affection she'd been deprived of during his absence. But though the siblings eventually grew close once again, there is still a gap between them, due to Li-Na's anger and her brother's guilt. A gap Li-Na' brother tries to fill with gifts, because he doesn't know what else to do to show how much he loves his sister.

The most important gift was dance lessons. The moment Li-Na was settled back in Hong Kong, her brother tracked down the academy where she'd previously been studying and re-enrolled her. And as she struggled to find her voice again after reuniting with her brother, dance remained the easiest way for her to express herself. Where dancing was once her voice in a difficult time, now dancing helped her find her voice again. And with the support of her brother, her grades at school gradually recovered.

High school was a busy time for Li-Na. Preparing for the HKDSE kept her busy, but dance remained her priority. When she turned 14 she auditioned and was accepted into HKAPA's Gifted Young Dancer programme. And it's dance that brought Li-Na to Recolle. After completing her HKDSE, Li-Na debated whether to aim for the HKAPA's program, a program in China, or an international dance program. Though her brother was rather apprehensive over her possibly leaving Hong Kong, he nevertheless promised to support her in whatever she chose.

Ultimately, Li-Na decided she wanted to expand her dance repertoire by attending Recolle University. But first, she needed to improve her English. So with a little help from her former high school, Li-Na signed up for an exchange program with Recolle High. In addition to taking classes at Recolle High, she'll continue her dance studies at Dance!!! Studio. And to further facilitate her English skills, she'll be living with a host family, that of Chiyo Matsuoka (permission obtained from both Chiyo and Rin players).

AU PERSONALITY: There are two major differences between Lenalee's life and Li-Na's life. The first is the lack of the centuries long war against the Earl. The second is not being trapped in the Order from her childhood onward.

By not having to fight for survival or fearing that everyone on the street could turn out to be Akuma, Li-Na has a much more positive outlook on life than Lenalee. Li-Na isn't constantly aware she could die tomorrow and leave her brother alone. Instead, she's free to plan her future and dream about whatever she wants. She's not constantly looking over her shoulder for threats that might not be there at all.

But because the Earl isn't there, that also means the nightmares Lenalee faces aren't there. Instead, Li-Na has to face the monsters that lurk inside regular humans, and those are much harder to fight. The abuse Li-Na suffered from her relative left her with some trust issues. Though she does make friends relatively easily, her trust is easily broken and rarely won back. Even her brother isn't exempt from this.

Because her brother was able to take her away from the abuse she was suffering, Li-Na was able to recover emotionally much better than Lenalee ever was. On the other hand, while Lenalee never felt any anger toward her brother over their separation, Li-Na does, though she's gradually working through it as she gets older. The first year following their reunion was filled with a lot of tears and anger as her brother struggled to regain Li-Na's trust.

While her experiences with her relative and the children at that school made Li-Na much more empathetic to outsiders, it also causes her to second guess herself. Consciously, she knows the way she was treated was not her fault, that she did nothing wrong. But subconsciously she questions why nothing she'd done had ever been enough. Why no matter how hard she tried to please her relative or fit in at the school, it never worked. So when she does receive approval from a person, she desperately wants more and simultaneously questions whether they're just being nice to her.

This feeds into Li-Na's excessive work ethic. Because she doubts herself, she believes she has to work extra, extra hard. She has a tendency to push herself to the point of exhaustion, which puts her at risk of injury. But even though she's aware she does this, she can't bring herself to stop. And when she runs into difficulty with something she's trying to learn, it gets worse. It requires a bit of persistence to convince Li-Na it's time to pack it in for the day.

This is in sharp contrast to Lenalee, because rather than being forced to undergo rigorous training with Innocence, Li-Na chose her dance training willingly. This enables her to pour all her passion for life into something beautiful that she enjoys. Sure, there are days she doubts her talent and days when her feet and legs are killing her, but in the end it's satisfying and fulfilling. Lenalee's training under the Order never had that quality to it. She worked hard because it meant life or death for her and those she cares about. It was her duty as an Exorcist.

Still, at her core, Li-Na is essentially Lenalee. She's warm and kind, she loves making friends, and she loves giving of herself to the people she cares about. Because she is so close to her brother, Li-Na is in turn very affectionate with her friends. Coming to Recolle will actually cause her to be even more so than usual, because her brother will be half a world away. So any friends she makes, she will cling to them all the more.
